What to Do When You Don’t Know God’s Next Step for You

You’re standing at a fork you didn’t ask for. Stay in the job or leave. Say yes to the move or not. Keep trying in the relationship or let it end. You’ve prayed about it, made the pros-and-cons list, asked the people you trust — and you still don’t have a clear answer. The waiting itself is starting to feel like failure.

Not knowing the next step isn’t a sign that God is absent or that you missed a secret sign. Most of Scripture is people walking forward with partial information, trusting the One leading them more than the map in their hand.

What the Bible says about unclear direction

This is one of the oldest promises about guidance. Notice what it does and doesn’t say:

«Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.»

Proverbs 3:5-6

It doesn’t promise the whole route in advance. It promises a straightened path as you go — direction that becomes clear in motion, not in the waiting room. «Acknowledge him in all your ways» means bringing God into the ordinary next thing, not only the big decision.

One step for today

Name the smallest faithful action you could take in the next 24 hours — one email, one honest conversation, one thing you’ve been avoiding. Do that one. Clarity for step ten almost always comes after you take step one, not before it.

You don’t need the whole plan to obey the next part of it. Trust gets spelled out in small moves.

If a short daily reading helps you keep trusting God with the parts you can’t see yet, these three devotionals are an easy place to start:
